Recycling Regulations

Recycling in the City of Brooklyn is mandatory.

Toter Carts

The City will provide one 64 gallon blue Toter cart for recycling. If you need another container you can purchase one at cost from the City. Each cart is registered by serial number to a specific address. The cart is the property of the City of Brooklyn and must stay with the house it is assigned to.

The homeowner is responsible for each container. If your container is damaged by the automated truck or stolen, it will be replaced free of charge by the City. If it is stolen you must file a report at the Police Station and then it will be replaced by the Service Department.

Toter Cart Placement

Recycling automated containers may be placed on the tree lawn for collection no sooner than 5 pm the evening before collection and no later than 7:30 am on collection day. It is necessary, regardless of when you think your normal collection time is, to have your container on the tree lawn in case the routes are changed for that day.

Make sure that you place your cart no more than 3 feet from the curb with the arrows on the lid facing the street away from obstructions such as:

  • Hydrants
  • Mailboxes
  • Parked cars
  • Trees
  • Utility poles, etc.

Make sure that your container is at least 3 to 5 feet from your automated rubbish cart and compost.

Collection Day Parking

Although at this time it is not mandatory, please try not to park on the street on collection day to ensure that carts are emptied on schedule.
