ATTENTION BROOKLYN RESIDENTS! MANDATORY COMPOSTING PROGRAM!

The City of Brooklyn is starting a mandatory yard waste recycling program effective June 21. This program will help reduce our landfill disposal costs. Residents will be required to place their yard waste on their tree lawn opposite their regular rubbish on their normal collection day. Yard waste consists of grass clippings, bushes, leaves and branches. Residents will be required to place their grass clippings in open containers or bio degradeable bags. DO NOT put loose grass clippings on the tree lawn. They must be contained or bagged. Yard waste cannot be mixed with the regular rubbish. The weight limit on the can of grass will be 50 pounds. If it is raining on your collection day, please place a lid on your can to help keep the weight down. Bio degradeable bags will be made available at the service garage while supplies last. A special thanks to LOWE'S who donated approximately 2,000 bags. Branches can be put out with the grass on your collection day. Branches must be cut into 4 foot lenghts, bundled and limited to one foot in diameter. Yard waste will be picked up between the months of April to December. The yard waste will be processed and made into compost. Residents will be able to pick up the finished product beginning in April. With the beginning of this program our special pick up program has changed. We will now only have special pick-ups for paint cans, appliances and items weighing over 50 pounds on FRIDAYS. All other refuse will be picked up on your normal collection day. If you have further questions you can call the service garage at 216-635-4232.

* Do to an equipment breakdown on July 29, 2010,we are forced to combine the compost material with the regular solid waste until repairs are made. We are expediting this process and hope to return to seperate collections for each in the near future. Please continue to place compostable material as directed by the previous instructions as we work to get back to our current program. Thank you.

PLASTIC BAGS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH 2010!
