CITY OF BROOKLYN

NOTICE OF A VACANCY IN THE OFFICE OF COUNCIL-AT-LARGE

Please be advised that due to the pending resignation of a member of Brooklyn City Council, effective December 31, 2017, there will be a vacancy in the unexpired term ending December 31, 2019.    Per Article III, Section 2 Qualifications of the Brooklyn City Charter: "Each candidate for election to Council, or any person appointed to fill a vacancy on Council, shall have been for at least three (3) consecutive years immediately prior to his/her election, and during his/her term of office shall continue to be, a resident of the municipality and a qualified elector thereof.  He/She shall not hold any other public, compensated elective office; and he/she shall not hold any other public position over which Council has control within the Municipality."    Article III, Section 4, Vacancies:  "Whenever the office of a Councilman shall become vacant, the vacancy shall be filled by appointment by a majority vote of all the remaining members of the Council; and if the vacancy shall not be so filled within thirty (30) days, the Mayor shall fill such vacancy by appointment.  Such appointee shall hold office for the balance of the unexpired term of the member in whose office the vacancy occurs or until the beginning of the term of a successor shall be duly elected for the unexpired term as hereinafter provided."

Requirements of the State of Ohio

Applicants that have been found guilty or have convictions for certain felonies that have not been expunged, sealed or pardoned may be restricted from the appointment to this vacancy, pursuant to the Ohio Constitution and the Ohio Revised Code.  The applicant selected must submit to a criminal background check prior to confirmation and swearing-in.

Required to file a Financial Disclosure Form within 15 days of being qualified (sworn-in.) For more information on this disclosure form visit the Ohio Ethics Commission website at www.ethics.ohio.gov.  Click on 'Financial Disclosure' button.

Must comply with the Ethics Laws established in the Ohio Revised Code.

Person appointed to this vacancy will fill the unexpired term ending December 31, 2019.

Regular meetings are the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7 p.m. from January through December (recess in July and August).  Special meetings and work sessions are scheduled when necessary, including meetings in July and August.   The Finance Committee has a standing meeting prior to each regular meeting and additional special meetings when necessary.  All other Committees schedule their meetings when necessary.

Please be advised that the Brooklyn City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 26, 2017 has been RESCHEDULED for Monday, December 18, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Brooklyn City Hall, 7619 Memphis Avenue, Brooklyn, Ohio 44144.  The Finance Committee will meet prior at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room.

 

 

 

 

 

 

City Council meetings are the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers located at 7619 Memphis Avenue.  Council recesses during July & August, with special meetings as necessary. Meetings that fall on a holiday Monday will be held the following Tuesday.
